Knitting Needle bag

22 Sep

For the last 6 years I’ve amassed many knitting needles and I’ve let them run free throughout the house. But I just have too many now to allow free range needles, so I’ve made a home for them.

I was able to use leftover material from the spongebob house project. The bag is made with spots for all of the standard needle sizes. And it rolls up for easy storage.

Sure, I missing having the needles roam free…but it sure will be nice to be able to find them when I need them.

Welcome Cinnamon

21 Sep

I’ve been a little slow adding posts the last couple of weeks, but that is because we have gotten a new addition to the family.

I haven’t had time to make much of anything recently, but I did get around to making her a little bed. I used some scrap pink fuzzy fabric and some left over bumper pad inserts (that I used in the sponge bob bed project).

I’m very happy to report that Cinnamon loves her little bed and sleeps in in frequently.

Mouse pincushion

07 Sep

I’ve seen a few of these around the interwebs, and I have finally gotten around to making one for myself.

My wrist pincushion is made from a fuzzy pink material and white felt. I used pink ribbon to create the wrist strap and it has a velcro closure.

It only took an hour or so to make, but it has already turned out to be an extremely useful tool.

CSA Moroccan

03 Sep

We just joined a local CSA (community sponsered agriculture). There are a lot of good reasons to join a CSA: support local growers, enjoy food that hasn’t traveled more than you have, enjoy fresh seasonal food. The only downside to our CSA is you don’t get to pick what you get. So today we got our first box and there were some items in it that we don’t normally eat, but I took this as a bit of a challenge. I put together a rather ambitious meal (for a wednesday) and was able to work in many of these items. After looking around at some receipes I decided to go with a Moroccan theme.

I started with an eggplant. I cut this into 1-inch cubes and tossed it with olive oil, salt, peper, garlic powder and a little cumin. This got roasted in a 400 degree oven for 25min. (stir occasionally).

Then I made a chicken tangine with yellow heirloom tomatoes. To make this: dice boneless chicken breast and saute. Then add diced onion, ground cumin, garlic and cinnamon. Then I added one diced yellow heirloom tomato and 2 regular red tomatoes. Add some golden raisins and a can of drained and rinsed chickpeas. Put a lid on your pan and let simmer.

We also received a spaghetti squash so I roasted that and tossed with melted butter roasted, garlic, cumin, salt and pepper.

Lastly I made a shredded carrot salad. This is simply shredded carrots and golden raisins with a vinaigrette of olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper and cinnamon.

Over all the meal turned out nice. I don’t have to cook for the rest of the week and we are getting to support our local farms.

Black Dress

01 Sep

I’ve been doing a fair amount of sewing lately and I’ve just finished up a dress. I made this using very easy vogue pattern V8443.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to sewing, but I have to say in NO WAY was this dress a very easy pattern. There were so many pleats and darts in this patern, plus the sleaves were a strange and compicated design. I think my main disappointment in this pattern was my expectation that I might have the dress finished in a few days.

That being said, I think the finished design turned out nice. And I might make another dress roughly based off of this pattern. If I did make another one, I would probably leave out the pleats in the skirt and just gather it or just reduce the over all size around the wasit so it wouldn’t need to be gathered or pleated. I would also change the sleeve design to something different. Maybe a cap sleeve or just a simple short or 3/4 sleeve.

Fairy Towel embroidery

01 Sep

Fairy embroidery
My most recent piece of towel embroidery is another design from sublime stitching . This one is a fairy. I also really enjoyed getting to use my newly organized embroidery floss .
